About this calculator
This calculator answers one specific question: what score do you need on a final exam to finish with a chosen overall grade? It combines your current course grade with the percentage weight of the final and solves for the missing final-exam score.
How to use it
- Enter your current course grade before the final.
- Enter the percentage of the course that the final exam is worth.
- Enter the overall course grade you want to finish with.
Final exam score formula
Needed final = [target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)] ÷ final weight
If you have 72% before a final worth 30% of the course and want 75% overall, the calculator solves for the exam score required to bridge that gap.
What if the result is over 100%?
A result above 100% means the target cannot be reached with an ordinary final-exam score under the weights entered. A result at or below 0% means you have already mathematically secured the target.
Use the weighting shown in your syllabus. Extra credit, dropped assignments, minimum-exam rules and category weighting can change the calculation.
